Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) has been delivering a series of lackluster films in recent years, and his latest offering, Konda, is based on the real-life story of Telangana politician Konda Murali. The film has been released, and here’s a look at how it fares.
Story
Set in Telangana, the film revolves around Konda (played by Trigun), a fiery young man with revolutionary ideals. His rebellious nature catches the attention of RK (Prashanth Karthi), who encourages him to join the Naxal movement. Impressed by Konda’s courage and strength, local politician Nalla Sudhakar (Prudhvi Raj) invites him to join his party. However, Konda is unaware that Sudhakar is merely using him for his own political gains. When Konda begins distancing himself, Sudhakar plots his assassination. The rest of the story follows how Konda navigates this deadly situation, his true motivations, and the impact of his political journey.
Positive Aspects
The film begins on a decent note, with Konda’s bold and fearless character being introduced effectively. Trigun does a fair job in the first half, portraying Konda with a certain intensity. Prudhvi Raj, who plays the primary antagonist, delivers a satisfactory performance. Auto Ram Prasad, in a supporting role, shines and leaves a lasting impression.
However, the real standout in the film is Irra Mor, who plays Konda Surekha. Her portrayal is sincere, and her character brings a level of depth to the narrative. In fact, at times, the film feels more like her biopic rather than Konda’s. Her performance is undoubtedly one of the film’s highlights.
Negative Aspects
One of the major downfalls of the film is the casting. RGV, once known for assembling stellar casts, now seems to rely on subpar actors, with many of the supporting roles being played by junior artists. The depiction of characters such as the cops and Naxalites lacks credibility and comes across as comical.
The storyline itself is rather basic, revolving around a rebellious youth rising to power with the backing of politicians. This is a plot RGV has explored in his previous films, and it’s difficult to see what unique angle he found in Konda Murali’s life to warrant this retelling. Trigun, who initially shows promise, seems to lose focus in the second half, delivering an uninspired performance that does little to elevate the story. The emotional depth and gripping drama typical of RGV’s earlier works are sorely missing.
Technical Aspects
On the technical front, the film is quite disappointing. The production values are substandard, and it appears the entire project was made on a tight budget. The background score is average at best, though the lyrics for the revolutionary songs are noteworthy. Unfortunately, the casting, production design, and editing are all underwhelming.
As for RGV’s direction, it is disheartening to see such a seasoned filmmaker produce work that lacks polish. While he used to choose compelling stories and top-notch casts, Konda reflects a decline in quality across all aspects of filmmaking, from storytelling to execution.
